In April 1997, Superquinn was the first supermarket
in Europe to introduce a reusable green bag on a
trial basis. A major design project followed involving
customers, staff, industrial engineers and designers
analysing customers' shopping patterns and
packing methods.
This project resulted in a new lightweight trendy green bag, which was introduced in October 2001. The bag was an overnight success not just for supermarket shopping but for general use. It reduced the time spent at checkouts by 15% and other retailers in Ireland and abroad continue to copy our bag design.
Since the introduction of the plastic bag levy in March 4th 2002, our campaign to get customers to stop using plastic bags and switch to a re-usable environmentally friendly bag has been a huge success. Superquinn, which led the industry in ridding the country of plastic bags, has reduced the number used in its shops by 96%, or 70 million plastic bags.
Superquinn's Greenbag has been redesigned since then and is now an attractive black bag bearing the Superquinn logo and ‘I Love Good Food’. Variations include the 'I love good wine' bag and the 'I love cool food' chill bag which is perfect for taking chilled food home.
