We have taken positive steps to incorporate green

policies and practices into our business to achieve

this goal, including:

Local Sourcing Of Products

Our sourcing policy in Superquinn is very simple; if we can get a product that meets our customer’s expectations from Ireland then we do. We spend €100m each year sourcing Irish fresh foods.

This ensures vastly reduced lead times than sourcing from overseas and a consistently high standard of fresh produce being brought to our customers on a daily basis.

All our Irish sourced products are instantly recognisable via the national icons and symbols which we clearly highlight on our in-store point-of-sale material and product packaging.

Recycling
Superquinn was one of the first members to join Repak in 1997. Almost 50% of waste material processed by Superquinn in 2007 was recovered and re-directed to constructive use, including cardboard, paper, plastic film, and polystyrene.

Energy And Water Efficiency
Our strategy includes energy audits, and the development of checklists and an awareness campaign for colleagues. In addition we have a natural gas-powered Combined Heat and Power installation at our support office in Lucan, which provides electricity and heat to both the store and the offices above it, and reduces the site’s carbon footprint by 179 tonnes per annum.

Transport Management
Using a single Distribution Centre means that deliveries to individual stores are down from 500 to 100 per week, and with internet shopping Superquinn’s delivery vans are helping to eliminate many car trips to stores. Superquinn was awarded the Green Retailer of the Year in 2008.

WEEE - Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment
Waste Electrical and Electronic equipment is taken back free of charge in our stores on a one-for-one, like-for-like basis. Waste batteries including rechargable batteries (of a type sold in our stores) are taken back free of charge in all our stores. You are not obliged to make any purchase when returning batteries to our stores.
