Located in Blanchardstown, Dublin 15, the
Superquinn distribution centre began operating
in November 2001.
Its objective is two fold. Firstly, to reduce out–of–stocks so that customers have as wide a range of choice as possible. Secondly, to deliver product to our stores everyday, ensuring our food is fresh and has the longest shelf life possible.
To achieve this, we built an 180,000 sq. ft Distribution Centre in Blanchardstown with ambient and refrigerated sections. The 112,000 sq. ft. ambient section is used to hold all of our non-temperature groceries. It is fully racked and divided into 22,000 reserve and 11,000 pick locations.
This allows us to operate a “Today for Tomorrow” policy … what shops order today gets delivered to them tomorrow!
The refrigerated compartment is 40,000 sq. ft. and completely empty! This is because we operate a “pick to zero” system whereby each morning, our suppliers only deliver the precise amount that each shop has ordered, which is in turn delivered to our shops in the evening. This allows us to deliver food that is as fresh as possible. A fleet of 28 multi-temperature trailers and 22 trucks is used to deliver both chilled and ambient product on a 24-hour basis.
The warehousing and distribution elements of this business are managed by Wincanton Logistics on Superquinn’s behalf. They employ a team of 250 people seven days per week to achieve this and operate in as environmentally friendly means as possible.
Our Supply Chain strategy is to maximise the frequency of deliveries while minimising lead time. Superquinn shops receive their deliveries an average of 15 hours after having placed their order with our Lucan shop receiving a full 45ft truck of product only 6 hours after ordering it. This helps us ensure that our ordering is accurate and ensures that our customers always enjoy full product availability.
