Several years ago, Superquinn became the first supermarket in the world to guarantee the absolute traceability of all its beef from pasture to plate, using TraceBack™, a revolutionary new scientific system developed at Trinity College, Dublin by IdentiGen (www.identigen.com) . In this time, hundreds of thousands of animals sold in Superquinn shops have been tested using this unique TraceBack system.

Using the precision of the latest DNA technology, TraceBack™ "reads" each animal's DNA code to make it easy to identify not only the farm the animal has come from, but the actual animal of origin as well. TraceBack™ also allows Superquinn to audit and inspect the quality systems the company already has in place. This system is part of the Beef Quality Assurance Scheme which verifies that all Superquinn beef meets the company's stringent specifications regarding animal welfare, freedom from disease, growth hormones and harmful bacteria.

Furthermore, all Superquinn farms are regularly inspected and are registered with the Superquinn Farm Assurance Scheme. All our cattle are young prime Irish beef under 30 months of age and are fed on a grass based diet which does not contain any animal protein. Under no circumstances are cattle in Ireland fed any meat or bone meal. Irish beef is among the best in the world. Unlike most countries in Europe, Irish cattle spend most of their lives on grass. Even in winter they are fed silage, which is grass-based.
